What we do

What We Do - Passive Houses & Sustainable Architecture

We are a specialist architecture studio with local and international Passive House experience.

We have worked across a range of project types, from one-off residential dwellings to education, community and social housing projects, new builds and high performance retrofits.

What our clients say

Clients appreciate our quiet professionalism and exceptional listening skills. We handle tight budgets, complex needs, unexpected scope changes, and site limitations with ease.

Our expertise spans various PHI certifications: Passive House (Classic, Plus, Premium), LEB, and EnerPHit (retrofits). We explain the benefits and reasoning behind these certifications, tailoring the technical details to your preference.

Not all clients choose certification or certifiable performance levels. This depends on location, budget, and other factors. We prioritize solutions that work best for each individual.

However, Energy Architecture doesn’t design standard, minimally compliant houses. We specialize in sustainable architecture, creating high-performing homes that offer a healthy, comfortable, and inspiring environment for current and future residents.

We take a long-term view, addressing immediate climate change and environmental challenges simultaneously.

“My new home is literally shaped by my values—by what I want for myself, my community and the environment. I wanted to work with people who got that and who would make that the foundation for the design. Choosing to work with Guy was a great decision.”

Rachel, Martins Farmhouse (strawbale and light earth, targeting Passive House certification)

"From our very first meeting we quickly realised Guy was a terrific listener, and he really heard and understood what we were wanting. We are grateful to him as an architect for designing us a house that is a joy to live in, and characterised by simplicity, light, and a truly surprising sense of spaciousness."

Andrea Middlemarch (High performance project)

“The house I have is beautiful. I would absolutely recommend Guy to others, he certainly knows what he is doing around this space.”

Jesse, Cheshire (Passive House classic certification)

“Always a calm and friendly person to work with. We learnt a lot from you and appreciated your expertise and experience.

We love the space created by the roofline. We love the simplicity of the design-it’s clean and not at all fussy.”

Katrine, Alexandra (High performance project)

"Working with Energy Architecture was great. Guy has a calm, grounding energy that made us feel in very safe hands. He is patient and listens really well and was accessible and accommodating to our many requests."

Jacinta, Wellington (High performance project)

The right approach

We offer fair and transparent fees for projects of any size or budget. Our expertise allows us to deliver high-performance designs at affordable prices. We create a guiding framework to ensure your designs meet your brief and achieve optimal cost-efficiency.

The right fit

It’s important to choose an architect on the basis of a successful track record and proven competency. But also consider not just what they produce but how they work and what they value.

We believe the best work happens when the client is a vital part of the design team: sharing the details of how they live, what inspires and delights them and their aspirations for their new home. You want an architect you feel good about working with; someone on the same page.

The right skills

Our team’s experience across Europe, the UK, and New Zealand brings significant expertise to various projects. We specialize in residential work, but we are also passionate about designing educational and community facilities, specialist workplaces, and social housing projects.

We don’t just build new buildings; we also tackle deep retrofits, significantly improving comfort, wellbeing, and energy efficiency. Additionally, we have designed and developed a number of prefabrication systems for various clients.

Energy Modelling

  • Modelling of energy balance and peak heating/cooling loads
  • Critical for all projects

Component and junction modelling

  • Modelling and managing durability and comfort at junctions and within the thermal envelope.
  • Critical for all projects

Designing for prefabrication

  • An increasing number of projects are fabricated off site in part or complete
  • There is a strong relationship between off site manufacturing and building quality and performance

Air permeability (air leakage) testing

  • Using a blower door for onsite confirmation of air permeability rates
  • Critical for certified projects and strongly recommended for all other projects
